The Energy Research Consortium recently co-hosted a discussion on proposed new measures to level the playing field in the electricity market, with the Energy Centre and representatives of the Energy Competition Task Force.

The discussion addressed proposals to introduce non-discrimination obligations for gentailers to prevent favouritism in hedge contracts and transparency requirements to promote fair competition, attract new entrants, and lower prices.

Speakers raised questions about the proposals including potential for unintended consequences, impacts on investments, and monitoring challenges. The Electricity Authority emphasised the deliberate design of these proposals to address the risks identified in the Risk Management Review. Feedback on these proposals is open until 23 April 2025. A summary and submission form are available on the Electricity Authority’s website.
